Planning and Investment Evaluation of Remote Controlled RTGs and Automated Gate, Brazil

In close collaboration with the client, Seaport conducted the planning and investment analysis for the introduction of remote controlled RTGS, and automated gate.

Envisioned Remote Controlled RTG Solution:

The remote controlled RTG solution, included conceptual development; and in-depth analysis of safety, operational, and technical risks associated with the envisaged solution. The gate solution and set-up, the envisaged gate solution and technology will outline how the gate technology can support in the solution of the remote controlled RTGs.

One of the main considerations in developing an envisioned remote controlled RTG solution was the balance between financial return and desirable automation level, considering the investments and practicalities of retrofitting the existing manned Diesel/Electric RTG fleet.

RTG terminals can be set up with several levels of automation, ranging from crane remote control, over semi-automation, to fully an automated RTG operation. The desired automation level should be selected based on expectations to cost of labour, the possibilities for retrofitting the current RTGs, etc. The aim should however be to achieve an economic level of automation, without compromising safety.

Automated Gate Solution:

With the aim of reducing the number of gate personnel, we provided a description of a gate automation concepts considered

  • Possible to built into the current and manned gate truck (equipped with OCR in each lane)
  • Integration with current truck booking system
  • integration with current TOS
  • Possible for future relocation of the gate

Pivotal was that, the gate automation concept should be capable of either eliminating or significantly reducing the number or gate runners (currently walking along the road inspecting and ensuring that trucks arriving early are not aligning in the gate queue). – Special for the current situation with a large number of trucks arriving outside provided time slot, and the limited truck staging area prior to the gate.
